Scion tC, xB and FR-S Coilovers

This article was written by Coilovers.com Owner and Principal, Lou Tortola.

We list Scion tC coilovers for both the 2005-2010 and 2011-2016 cars from BC Racing, KW, TEIN and Ksport. The xB and FR-S have their own kits, and the FR-S has the widest choice of any Scion we carry.

Scions still show up at every meet. The tC is an easy-living coupe that looks right low. The xB is a box that people love to slam. The FR-S is a rear-drive sports car that wants a proper performance suspension. Same badge, three different jobs for a coilover kit.

Fitment below comes straight from our listing titles. If your year or trim is not named, we do not assume it fits. Confirm on the product page, or call 1-800-460-9106 with your VIN.

Scion tC Coilovers by Year

The tC splits at 2011. Our titles call the first car ANT10 and the second AGT20, so check which one you have.

2005 to 2010 tC

BC Racing. The 2005-2010 Scion tC FWD BC Racing listing comes in the BR, DS or RM Series. A separate Extreme Low listing comes in BR for owners who want the car as low as it goes.

KW. KW lists the 2005-2010 tC (ANT10) in KW V2.

TEIN. TEIN lists the tC (ANT10L) in Flex Z and Street Basis Z.

Ksport. Ksport lists a 2005-2010 tC kit.

2011 to 2016 tC

BC Racing. The 2011-2016 Scion tC FWD BC Racing listing comes in BR, DS or RM, and says "Swift Front Only".

KW. The 2011-2016 Scion tC KW listing covers the AGT20 in KW V2.

TEIN and Ksport. TEIN lists the tC (AGT20L) in Street Basis Z. Ksport lists a tC kit titled 2011-2018.

All of these are front-drive cars, and every one of them benefits from a careful setup. More on that below.

Scion xB Coilovers: First and Second Generation

2004 to 2007 xB. The 2004-2007 Scion xB FWD BC Racing listing comes in BR or RM and says "Swift Front Only". Ksport lists the xB (NCP31). TEIN lists the xB (NCP31L) in Street Basis Z.

2008 to 2015 xB. BC Racing lists the 2008-2015 xB FWD in BR or RM, also "Swift Front Only". TEIN lists the xB (AZE151L) in Flex Z and Street Advance Z. Ksport lists a 2008-2016 xB kit.

The xB is tall and boxy, so body roll is what owners notice first. A coilover with a sensible spring rate takes a lot of that lean out without making it harsh.

Scion FR-S Coilovers

The FR-S gets the deepest list of any Scion in our catalogue.

BC Racing. The 2012-2016 Scion FR-S BC Racing listing says "Extreme by Default". It comes in BR, DS, ER, RM, HM, ZR or ZX. Check the Series options on the product page.

KW. KW lists the 2012-2016 FR-S (all) in KW V1 or KW V3.

TEIN. TEIN lists the FR-S (ZNA) in Street Basis Z, Street Advance Z, Flex Z, Mono Sport and RX1.

Öhlins, Feal, Solo-Werks, Ksport and Bilstein. Öhlins lists a 2012-2016 FR-S Road & Track kit, and a BRZ listing that also names the FR-S and Toyota 86. Feal lists the GT86 and FR-S. Solo-Werks and Ksport list the 2012-2016 FR-S. Bilstein lists 2013-2016 FR-S kits in B14 PSS and B12 Pro-Kit.

Fortune Auto lists the FT86 (ZN6) and the BRZ, but those titles do not name the FR-S. Call before you order one for an FR-S.

Read the option lists too. The Feal title notes a heavy front cartridge and a Wisefab spec rear, available if requested. Its listing shows Default, Road Race and Pro Long Stroke spec types, and the 441+, 442 and 443 include Swift Springs. Ask us which spec suits your car before you order.

Which Brand Fits Your Scion Build

Every brand here serves a different driver. Here is how the series on these listings line up.

BC Racing uses nitrogen-charged monotube dampers in every series. The BR, DS and RM have 30-click simultaneous compression and rebound. The RM uses an inverted monotube for MacPherson strut cars. The ZR, on the FR-S, has 30-click rebound, 15-click low-speed compression and 12-click high-speed compression. Swift Springs SPEC-R upgrade springs are an option, front only where the title says so.

KW V1 has preset damping. KW V2 adds rebound adjustment, and KW V3 adjusts rebound and compression separately. All three use twin-tube dampers in stainless steel bodies.

TEIN Street Basis Z has fixed damping with adjustable ride height. Street Advance Z and Flex Z give you 16-click damping. The Mono Sport is a monotube design. Our TEIN coilovers review covers the range in more depth.

Solo-Werks S1 coilovers have adjustable ride height and factory-calibrated fixed damping. If you want a simple kit at an accessible price point, our look at value coilovers compares the options.

Front-Drive Setup Notes for the tC and xB

The tC and xB are front-drive cars. The front tires steer, put the power down and do most of the braking. That puts the front end to work, so a front-drive coilover kit lives or dies on front damping and alignment.

Lower the car and the front camber goes more negative. A little helps grip. Too much wears the inside edge of the tires. Toe moves too, and toe wear eats tires fast. That is why the alignment after the install is not optional.

Several of the BC Racing Scion listings show rear extenders as an add-on. Whether you need them depends on how low you go and what you want from the rear. Ask us before you add them.

If the car pushes wide in corners after the install, check the alignment and tire pressures first. Then look at damping. Change one thing at a time so you know what worked.

Daily Driver or Stance Build

Most Scion tC coilovers end up on daily drivers. Some end up on stance builds that sit on the ground. Both work if you are honest about what you want.

Daily Driver

Keep the drop modest so the car never rides on its bump stops. Start damping from the kit's manual setting. A fixed-damping kit like the TEIN Street Basis Z keeps life simple. So does a KW V2 with the rebound set soft.

Stance Build

Low means less suspension travel and more chance of hitting the bump stops. Check tire clearance at full lock and with passengers aboard. Expect to trade ride comfort for the look.

FR-S Track Days

Look at the adjustable kits. A three-way kit like the BC Racing ZR gives you more room to tune for the track. So does a KW V3, with separate rebound and compression adjustment.

Wheels and tires decide how low you can actually go. A wider tire or a lower offset pushes the tire toward the fender lip. More negative offset or spacers also increase scrub radius, which changes how the steering feels. Our guide to wheel and tire combinations covers the trade-offs.

Big wheels add unsprung weight, the mass the springs do not carry: wheel, tire, hub and brakes. Heavy wheels make the dampers work harder over bumps. A coilover does not reduce that mass by itself.

Setting Up Your Scion

Lower in steps. Use our guide to set ride height on coilovers, then tighten every locking collar. Torque every fastener to the spec in the kit's manual, and recheck the collars after the first few hundred miles. Get an alignment after any height change, because camber and toe both move. If you are new to all this, start with what are coilovers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do 2005-2010 tC coilovers fit a 2011-2016 tC?

No. Every brand lists the two generations as separate products. Our titles call them ANT10 and AGT20. Order the listing that names your year.

What are good coilovers for a Scion tC daily driver?

A kit with a sensible spring rate and simple damping. The KW V2, BC Racing BR Series and TEIN Street Basis Z all fit that brief on the years they list. Call 1-800-460-9106 to talk through your car.

Do FR-S coilovers fit the BRZ and Toyota 86?

Some do. The Öhlins BRZ listing names the FR-S and Toyota 86, and Feal lists the GT86 and FR-S together. Most other brands list each car separately, so check the title.

What does "Extreme Low" mean on a BC Racing listing?

Extreme Low is a lower-riding BC Racing version, listed separately for some cars and ordered as a custom build on others. The FR-S title says 'Extreme by Default', so call us before you order and we will confirm the ride height range for your car.

How low can I go on a Scion xB?

There is no single number. It depends on your wheels, tires and how you use the car. Leave enough travel that the car does not ride on its bump stops.

Do I need an alignment after installing coilovers?

Yes. Any ride height change moves camber and toe. Align the car after the install and after any later height change.

Can I add Swift Springs to Scion tC coilovers?

On BC Racing kits, Swift Springs SPEC-R upgrade springs are an option. The 2011-2016 tC listing says "Swift Front Only", so the upgrade applies to the front springs there.
